Theory of Didactical Situations in Mathematics: Didactique Des Mathematiques, 1970-1990 (Mathematics Education Library, Vol 19)
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (December, 1997)
Authors: Guy Brousseau, Nicolas Balacheff, Martin Cooper, Rosamund Sutherland, and Virginia Warfield
Average review score:

An important, necessary selection of pioneering articles.
Guy Brousseau articles covered in this book comprise one of the very significant contributions in this second half of the century to mathematics education. It is an important contribution towards the formulation of a theory to explore the 'phenomena that occur during the teaching of mathematics'. This selection of papers will go a long way to help non-french speaking readers to approach not only Brousseau's work, but also the now wide and deep body of contributions of the French school of 'didactique des mathématiques' to mathematics education as a well-established research discipline. The articles included cover some of the main concepts that Brousseau has dealt with durig the period 1970-1990. The conceptions of didactical situation, milieu, and different types of didactical contracts are shown and a careful reading will help to reveal some of the complex background from which these ideas developed. This is by no means easy reading, but then the subject might be one of the most intriguing and, simultaneously, underestimated and oversimplified areas of educational research. Brousseau's work does not offer easy, run-of-the mill recipes to solve questions of learning mathematics. Instead it gives serious indications and contributions of a way toward meaningful research. This is a remarkable contribution even for those who do not share the philosophy underlying some of 'didactique des mathématiques' theories. The editors have done good work, the preludes to each chapter constitute by themselves a learned commented introduction to some of the notions and important points in the area. They are a welcome overview to help to put Brouseau's work in perspective.

Time Distortion in Hypnosis: An Experimental and Clinical Investigation
Published in Paperback by Crown House Publishing (01 September, 2002)
Authors: Linn F., Md. Cooper and Milton H. Erickson
Average review score:

Time Distortion - An Extremely Useful Hypnotic Phenomenon
The book explored time distortion phenomenon and provides lot of examples - some are interesting purely from investigative perspective as in being able to count in few minutes of hypnosis the number of cotton balls it would take to count in several hours of real time; others are very practical and useful as in accelerating learning or developing a skill - imagine in few hours of hypnosis you can develop an expertise it would take you years to develop in real time.
Even many new techniques from the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming such as Time-Lines provide very effective method for further exploring and enhancing effects of time distortion, this book is not only a classic, but also provides a great background in terms of research.

Tom Friedman (Contemporary Artists)
Published in Paperback by Phaidon Press Inc. (March, 2001)
Authors: Dennis Cooper, Bruce Hainley, and Adrian Searle
Average review score:

Great artist, Great collection
Tom Friedman takes household objects and...well read the book jacket if you want a description of what Friedman does, the fact is this is a great book. The obsessive nature of Friedman's work really comes through in this collection, with descriptions of the painstaking process Friedman went through to create his works. One such work is a blank piece of paper that Tom Friedman literally stared at for a thousand hours, not consecutively of course. Friedman explains his thought process, how he conceptualizes his art. The "1000 hours of Staring" for example, are Friedman's attempts to "create" a history to an object (without knowing the "history" of the piece, you would simply be looking at a blank piece of paper)

It would probably be more impressive to see these pieces in person, (especially in his pieces that are very very small or emphasize 'imagined' space such as the area that Friedman had a witch put a hex on). To anyone who hate art installations and the like this book may change your mind. But don't think that Friedman only does installations, his work covers many different areas, from photograhpy to sculpture and illustration. The one quality that links all these mediums is Friedman's intricate, detailed thought process. Even people who aren't into modern art will be forced to meditate on the nature of the objects Friendman employs. Can't say enough about this book. Pick it up even if you think you don't like post modernism, pick it up even if you hate art.

Toy Buildings 1880-1980
An outstanding book for dollhouse collectors. Toy Buildings is a must for any collector with interest from Bliss to Converse to Keystone buildings. This book is not limited to dollhouse, but covers a wide variety of toy buildings, many that my brother had. It is an excellent refernce for history of manufactures to present day values for many toy buildings of this era. The color photos are of high quality and does an outstanding job of detailing many old toy building. Most dollhouse collectors have accumulated many Mystery buildings, this book is very useful in unraveling these Mysteries. Written by two excellent collectors, who have written several dollhouse books, this book offers new photos and information on houses and buildings not discussed in past publications. I am a collector of over 25 years and am very glad that I have added this outstanding book to my library.

Tree of Hope Review
Tree of Hope is a book about a girl named Florrie who grew up during the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a time when a lot of people were poor and many people lost the jobs they had. In the story Florrie's father once was an actor at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem, New York. Now that the Depression has hit Florrie's father is without a job because people don't have money to go see the shows. The only thing her father has to remember about the good times at the theatre is a tree. In the book it is called The Tree of Hope. Her father tells her about the tree and then they wish on it, they wished times went back to the way they were.

Then a director Orson Welles plans to do a play at the Lafayette. Florrie thinks this has happened because of her and her father's wish. The only thing about it is that the play is MacBeth; MacBeth is a play about white people. People who knew that Florrie's father was auditioning for the play would say, "Shakespeare's a white man, we oughta only be doin' written 'bout us. Them people (the white director's) at the Lafayette've come to Harlem just to laugh at us!" This statement seemed to get to Florrie's father but he said, "There will be plays written about us. This is Harlem's MacBeth-you'll see." To find out what else happens you will have to read the book.
